Digitalis lutea

A perennial foxglove with slender summer spires of soft yellow flowers.

Care notes by theboxerge Updated

About this plant

Yellow foxglove gives a border narrow, upright flower spikes without the bulk of a shrub. It can fit a lightly shaded planting scheme, provided the soil does not swing between drought and standing water.

Care at a glance

Light
Partial shade is a useful starting point; sun and deeper shade are also tolerated.
Watering
Maintain moderate moisture; neither prolonged drought nor waterlogging suits it.
Soil
Humus-rich soil, ideally neutral to alkaline, with good drainage.

Plan your care

Choose a position where the flower spikes can rise above lower plants. Check nearby vigorous perennials through spring so they do not crowd the emerging crown.

Cut off the main spike as its flowers fade if you want to encourage flowering side shoots. Inspect fresh growth for slug damage before blaming a failure to grow on poor nutrition.

Growing tips

All parts are toxic if eaten. Keep away from children and pets that might chew plants, and wear gloves when handling. Do not grow it among edible leaves where it could be confused with a food crop.
