About this plant
Bay offers year-round foliage and can be trained into a formal shape. Allow enough root space to support its canopy, particularly if it is grown as a standard tree.
Care at a glance
- Light
- Bright light or sun
- Watering
- Water when the surface begins to dry
- Soil
- Free-draining potting compost
Plan your care
A standard bay has a raised canopy that catches wind. Choose a stable container and a position where the crown will not block a route when it grows.
Check moisture inside the root ball after a windy spell. In winter, inspect drainage and move a vulnerable pot to shelter during severe cold; evergreen leaves do not mean the container roots are immune to damage.
Growing tips
Clip lightly to keep the desired shape. A container can dry quickly in wind, while cold, wet compost is a problem in winter; check drainage and shelter the pot during severe cold.
