About this plant
Dracaenas range from compact plants to taller cane forms. Their vertical shape makes them useful where floor space is limited, provided the canopy is not pressed against a wall.
Care at a glance
- Light
- Bright, indirect light.
- Temperature
- 65-80 °F, though some varieties may tolerate cooler temperatures
- Watering
- Allow the surface of the mix to dry before watering; avoid standing water.
- Soil
- A draining houseplant mix in a container with open drainage holes.
Plan your care
Choose the plant form as well as the pot: a tall cane needs ceiling and canopy space, while a smaller rosette fits a different location. Leave access to inspect the lower leaves and compost.
If growth leans towards a window, review the light and rotate the pot gently. Do not use extra fertiliser as a substitute for a better position, and check moisture before responding to a yellow leaf.
Growing tips
Let the surface of the compost dry before watering again. Remove dead lower leaves gently and avoid standing water in an outer pot. Increase exposure to brighter light gradually.
