About this plant
A monstera needs room for both its leaves and its climbing growth. A sturdy support helps an established plant grow upwards; young leaves can remain whole before mature foliage develops.
Care at a glance
- Light
- Bright, indirect light supports growth; avoid harsh direct sun.
- Temperature
- 60-85 °F
- Watering
- Let the upper compost dry before watering thoroughly and draining.
- Soil
- A draining houseplant mix in a container with open drainage holes.
Plan your care
Plan for a climbing plant rather than judging only the current leaf span. A stable support and room for new leaves are easier to provide before the plant outgrows a shelf.
Check the root ball before adding water, especially if a large outer pot hides the nursery pot. If new leaves stay small, assess light and growing conditions; extra feed alone will not compensate for a very dim position.
Growing tips
Water when the top layer of compost has dried, then empty the saucer. Guide stems onto a support without tying leaf stalks tightly. Rotate the pot occasionally for balanced growth.
