Care notes by theboxerge Updated

About this plant

A clump-forming penstemon with pink tubular flowers and a pale, marked throat. It brings a long flowering layer to a sunny border, but cold wet ground is a more demanding setting than a sheltered, draining bed.

Care at a glance

Light
Full sun or partial shade.
Watering
Water establishing plants and during extended dry spells; avoid keeping the crown wet.
Soil
Fertile, well-drained soil.
Hardiness
Needs protection in cold areas; survival depends on shelter and drainage.

Plan your care

Choose the planting position with winter drainage in mind. A low hollow that holds rain is a poor place to test a borderline-hardy plant. In a cold garden, use dry winter protection or retain a young backup plant from cuttings.

Remove spent flower stems to keep the clump tidy. Check for healthy basal growth before a major spring tidy, and protect emerging shoots from slugs and snails.

Growing tips

A pot gives flexibility to move the plant out of harsh weather, but also needs reliable drainage. Never leave it standing in a saucer of winter rain.
