About this plant

Cowslip brings a small spring flower display above a low rosette. Its scale suits the front of a border or an open grassy planting where taller plants will not shade and bury the leaves.

Care at a glance

Light
Full sun or partial shade.
Watering
Keep establishing plants moist through dry spells without soaking the crown.
Soil
Moisture-retentive, well-drained soil.

Plan your care

Make the planting decision at ground level: the leaves need their own clear space even when the flower stems stand above nearby vegetation. Avoid deep mulch over the centre of the rosette.

If using it in a grassy area, plan mowing around the flowering display and any seed you wish to retain. In a border, check after surrounding perennials expand so the small plant is not lost beneath them.

Growing tips

Inspect young leaves for slug damage and avoid watering simply because the surface looks dry. Feel the soil near the roots; damp ground does not need another soaking.
