About this plant

A rubber plant can become a substantial indoor feature. Leave room for new leaves to unfurl and keep it in a stable position, away from frequent cold draughts or abrupt temperature changes.

Care at a glance

Light
Medium to bright indirect light.
Temperature
60-85 °F
Watering
Let the upper mix start drying, then water thoroughly and drain.
Soil
A draining houseplant mix in a container with open drainage holes.

Plan your care

Place the pot where it can remain as the canopy grows. A narrow gap beside a draughty door can become unsuitable even when the young plant initially fits.

Clean dusty leaves gently with a damp cloth and leave room for new leaves to unfold. If pruning is needed, plan the shape before cutting and wear gloves because the sap can irritate skin.

Growing tips

Let the top of the compost begin to dry between thorough waterings. Wipe dust from the leaves with a soft damp cloth. Wear gloves if pruning, as the milky sap can irritate skin.
