Care notes by theboxerge Updated

About this plant

Tall verbena lifts small purple flower clusters above a sparse framework of stems. It can add height without making a solid wall of foliage, but it may seed into surrounding beds and paths.

Care at a glance

Light
Full sun.
Watering
Water establishing plants and in prolonged dry spells; avoid saturated soil.
Soil
Moderately fertile, well-drained soil.
Hardiness
Needs extra protection in cold areas; winter wet can reduce survival.

Plan your care

Use the open stems where you want to see through a planting layer. Give young plants space to establish before judging their eventual height.

Leave sound stems over winter and cut back in spring as new growth appears at the base. In colder areas, protect the crown with a dry winter mulch. If seedlings would be unwelcome, remove fading heads before seed is shed and check nearby gravel or paving.

Growing tips

Self-seeding is not always desirable outside a managed bed. Check local guidance before allowing it to spread and remove seedlings that escape the intended planting area.
