About this plant
Carex forms a fountain of narrow foliage that contrasts with upright shrubs and broad-leaved plants. It is useful as a textural planting rather than a showy flowering centrepiece.
Care at a glance
- Light
- Partial shade or gentle sun
- Watering
- Keep compost moist but well drained
- Soil
- Moisture-retentive, well-draining compost
Plan your care
Use this sedge for a soft foliage layer around more upright plants, keeping the leaves clear of a busy walkway. Its narrow leaves can hide a small pot that is drying rapidly.
Feel the compost during warm or windy periods. Groom dead foliage gently instead of cutting the plant repeatedly to a short height; review the position if the healthy leaves are continually damaged.
Growing tips
Comb out dead leaves gently. Do not repeatedly cut healthy foliage back as if it were a lawn, and check small pots often during dry or windy weather.
