About this plant
English ivy can trail from a pot or climb using aerial roots. Position it where vigorous growth can be managed and where attachment will not damage vulnerable surfaces.
Care at a glance
- Light
- Partial shade or shade
- Watering
- Water when the surface begins to dry
- Soil
- Well-draining compost
Plan your care
Decide whether the ivy will trail from its pot or climb a deliberate support. Avoid letting attachment roots establish on surfaces that need to remain clear or undamaged.
Trim before stems bridge into neighbouring pots. If foliage deteriorates in a hot dry corner, inspect leaf undersides as well as moisture; simply adding water may miss a pest problem.
Growing tips
Trim wandering shoots to keep paths and neighbouring plants clear. Check for red spider mites in hot, dry positions. Keep leaves and berries away from children and pets.
