Care notes by theboxerge Updated
About this plant
Fargesia grows in clumps rather than sending out long running rhizomes. Even so, a container-grown clump needs room for its roots and regular water to maintain a full screen.
Care at a glance
- Light
- Sheltered partial shade
- Watering
- Keep the root ball moist; do not let it dry out
- Soil
- Moisture-retentive compost with drainage
Plan your care
A clumping bamboo still needs substantial root space, so choose it for a generous container rather than a shallow trough. Leave enough access to water the full root ball.
After wind or heat, check the compost when leaves roll. If it is already wet, do not automatically add more water. Review drainage and thin congested old canes only where it improves the clump.
Growing tips
Choose a substantial, stable pot and check it after windy days. Rolled leaves can signal water stress; inspect the compost before adding water. Thin old canes at the base if the clump becomes crowded.
