About this plant
Golden shield fern is grown for its finely divided fronds. Its woodland character pairs well with broad leaves in a sheltered, shaded planting.
Care at a glance
- Light
- Partial shade or shade
- Watering
- Keep evenly moist without standing water
- Soil
- Humus-rich, moisture-retentive compost
Plan your care
Place the fern where emerging fronds are sheltered and can unfold without rubbing against railings or neighbouring pots. A shaded location can still be dry if it sits beneath an overhang.
Check the compost during rainless spells rather than relying on shade to retain water. Keep the crown visible when adding compost or mulch so that new growth is not buried.
Growing tips
Shelter young fronds from drying wind. Remove damaged older fronds carefully and avoid burying the crown deeply when repotting.
