About this plant
Mahogany fern adds layered foliage to containers and woodland-style displays. Give unfurling fronds enough room so they are not rubbed by passing people or neighbouring pots.
Care at a glance
- Light
- Partial shade or shade
- Watering
- Keep compost consistently moist, not saturated
- Soil
- Humus-rich compost with good drainage
Plan your care
Give each frond room to unfold in a sheltered shaded display. A fern placed beside a hot wall may experience drying conditions even when the sun does not directly reach its leaves.
Water the root zone according to the compost condition. Remove worn fronds carefully without disturbing the central crown, and review shelter if new fronds repeatedly become damaged.
Growing tips
Place away from hot reflected sun and drying winds. Clear dead fronds without damaging the crown, and water the root zone rather than relying on occasional misting.
