Moth orchid
Phalaenopsis hybrid
Pink and white moth orchids share a need for filtered light, airy bark and roots that drain freely.
Care notes by theboxerge Updated
About this plant
Moth orchids hold long-lasting flowers on arching stems. Their roots need air as well as moisture: a bark-based mix is more suitable than dense garden soil. The pink and white plants shown here use the same care routine.
Care at a glance
- Light
- Bright, indirect light
- Temperature
- A stable indoor spot away from hot radiators
- Watering
- Water when bark is approaching dryness and roots indicate a need; drain fully.
- Soil
- An open orchid-bark mix
- Humidity
- Moderate humidity with airflow; avoid water trapped in the crown.
Plan your care
Inspect the bark and roots before watering. In a clear pot, silvery roots and bark approaching dryness are useful prompts to check; green, damp roots usually do not need another soaking. Drain completely and keep water out of the leaf crown.
Choose a bright window with protection from strong sun and avoid sudden moves between hot and cold positions while buds develop. Keep flower stakes loose enough that clips do not squeeze the stem.
After flowers fade, continue checking the roots and leaves. Remove a fully brown flower spike with clean tools. Repot when the bark breaks down or the plant needs it, using orchid bark and a draining pot rather than automatically choosing a much larger container.

These colour variants share the care guidance above. Choose by colour; check the label for any cultivar-specific instructions.
Growing tips
Do not cut firm aerial roots simply because they extend outside the pot. Empty the outer pot after every watering and check for trapped water beneath the nursery pot.
